ODYSSEUS

  • Odysseus’s composition leads the viewer's eye erratically through the intersections and curves of the sculpture without rest, in the same way Odysseus sought home over the chaotic seas. The variety of curves illustrate the many pathways Odysseus confronted on his journey home. Interlaced and tangled strings demonstrate how gods and men meddled with Odysseus on his sojourn. Curves leading back to their origin’s direction displays the frustrated efforts of Odysseus when outside events prevented his expedition from progressing. I emphasized the beauty of the imperfect cracking walnut knot with three irregular inlay pieces and hand-braided strings forming patterned lines in contrast with the natural hues of the wood. I create depth by separating the negative spaces with lines amidst the positive forms of the live-edge wood.
