Odysseus No. 10

Odysseus No. 10 has steam-bent white oak and ash curves ending in geometric shaped forms. The top right end-piece is tipped with burnt umber mahogany and red padauk. The body of the sculpture is created from a live-edge walnut slab juxtaposed with a rectangular cherry member. The live-edge walnut is patched with angular maple and mahogany inlay. Odysseus No. 10 is interlaced with green and teal hand-made strings creating visual tension and potential energy.

My process subverts the perfectionism of traditional woodworking, and instead is more akin to the gesture of an impressionist’s palette knife. Cracked and split wood, hand tool marks, and smooth surfaces illustrate how people are not complete, but in a state of growth or decay.

Odysseus No. 10’s composition of looping curves and hand-cut intersections is indicative of the ancient hero’s winding journey home. The sculpture encapsulates the beauty found in the diversity between perfection and imperfection.

Dimensions: H22” x W31” x D7”

Materials: Hand-Made Hemp Strings, Beeswax, Ash, White Oak, Walnut, Cherry, Mahogany, Maple, Padauk, Polycrylic

The light weight sculpture is easily hung with two small screws and a template I will provide upon purchase.
