Odysseus No. 11

Odysseus No. 11 has steam-bent white oak curves ending in carved, organic forms. The top shape is carved from walnut, the bottom shape is carved from mahogany, the two ends on the right are ash and cherry wood. The connecting body of the sculpture is cherry and live edge walnut. The cherry piece is inlayed with walnut and angerie wood. Odysseus No. 11 is interlaced with blue, white, green, teal, and black hand made strings creating visual tension and potential energy.

My process subverts the perfectionism of traditional woodworking, and instead is more akin to the gesture of an impressionist’s palette knife. Cracked and split wood, hand tool marks, and smooth surfaces illustrate how people are not complete, but in a state of growth or decay.

Odysseus No. 11’s composition of looping curves and hand-cut intersections is indicative of the ancient hero’s winding journey home. The sculpture encapsulates the beauty found in the diversity between perfection and imperfection.

Dimensions: H26” x W28” x D10”

Materials: Hand-Made Hemp Strings, Beeswax, Polycrylic, Ash, White Oak, Walnut, Cherry, Mahogany, Angerie

The light weight sculpture is easily hung with two small screws and a template I will provide upon purchase.
