Odysseus No. 14
Odysseus No. 14 has steam bent white oak curves ending in carved, organic forms. The curves starting at the top and working clockwise end in carved ash, walnut, mahogany, cherry, ash, walnut wood. The connecting body of the sculpture is cherry and live-edge walnut. The walnut is inlayed with mahogany and maple wood. The top of the cherry is accented with a walnut inlay key. The joinery for the main two pieces is embellished with a large cherry wedge. Odysseus No. 14 is interlaced with yellow, green, light blue, and orange hand made strings creating visual tension and potential energy.
My process subverts the perfectionism of traditional woodworking, and instead is more akin to the gesture of an impressionist’s palette knife. Textures of cracked and split wood, hand tool marks, and smooth surfaces illustrate how people are not complete, but in a state of growth or decay.
Odysseus No. 14’s composition of looping curves and hand-cut intersections is indicative of the ancient hero’s winding journey home. The sculpture encapsulates the beauty found in the diversity between perfection and imperfection.
